TikTok Content Creators Driving Unofficial Market for Unlicensed Weight-Loss Drug

A shadow economy for unapproved slimming medications is propelled by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on messaging platforms, based on new investigations.

Investigational Treatment Gaining Popularity Online

The experimental drug, which is still in clinical trials, is being advertised by online personalities for its supposed weight-reducing effects. Viewers are urged to contact these accounts privately for supplier links, while also obtaining discount codes.

Thriving Commerce on Social Networks

Separately, a flourishing market exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of participants share “before and after” images, administration instructions and claims of next-day UK delivery. Sellers promote the substance there before directing customers to WhatsApp for transactions.

Learning About Retatrutide

This medication is an experimental injection developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Preliminary studies indicate it could help individuals reduce up to 25% of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted digitally as the successor to Ozempic.

Healthcare Professionals Voice Concerns

Nevertheless, physicians and pharmacists have warned that the sale of what is still an unlicensed medication in the UK is a cause for concern and could lead to individuals injecting substances of unknown origin.

Some experts stated the demand for the experimental drug could be linked to the increasing price of licensed weight loss products such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Position and Enforcement

Marketing the unapproved drug on TikTok or messaging apps is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unapproved drug that cannot be marketed or distributed for human use under the British medical regulations.

Some influencers attempt to sidestep the rules by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a controlled drug, but advertising and distribution can still violate pharmaceutical, marketing, and consumer laws, potentially leading to fines, legal action or prison.

Platform Response and Material Removal

According to TikTok, the platform has removed problematic material and banned related keywords and query recommendations. The organization stated it was committed to maintaining the service safe and allocating resources in enhancing compliance measures.

Digital Trading Activities

Research also found communities with up to 9,000 participants marketing retatrutide using Telegram's built-in search feature, which functions like a online catalog. Typing “retatrutide” instantly displays groups with thousands of users, populated with photos of slimming results, glowing reviews and step-by-step instructions for mixing or injecting at residence.

Within minutes of joining one community, a seller posted contact information, where most purchases take place. The seller sent an instruction manual and promised shipping within 48 hours. When questioned whether the substance was authentic, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a alleged testing documentation. None asked about weight, medical conditions or previous experience.

Product Information and Pricing

Inside these communities, messages show dark colored packages with postal service stickers, stating to contain new batches. One communication read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can choose between powder vials, mixed at home with sterile water, or pre-filled pens usually priced at £160 for 20mg. When asked how long a injector should be used, sellers give contradictory answers ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Service Moderation and Security Actions

A representative for Telegram said it regularly moderated dangerous material on its service including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Professional Cautions

“Individuals are administering materials they cannot confirm. Although the science behind retatrutide is valid, these online versions may not include what they claim,” said a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor linked the surge in interest to current price rises for authorized weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, patients are using social media. But fake injections are extremely dangerous. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the conditions they were made in was sterile,” she said.

Her team has previously seen individuals harmed by personal administration from unconfirmed sources. “We recognize the disappointment, but purchasing from messaging apps or communication platforms is taking chances with your well-being,” stated Wyllie. “These substances could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”

Manufacturer Statement

A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company said the substance was in phase 3 research studies and had not been reviewed or authorized by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this point no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they said, adding that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly investigational substance not yet approved … may subject patients to potentially significant health risks”.
