Over two dozen Olympic medallists, coaches and other world-class competitors have signed a appeal demanding a end to the death penalty of a boxing champion and instructor, who is facing execution in the country.

“Athletics is designed to promote optimism, unity, and fortitude,” the supporters wrote. “The death penalty of a titleholder for his political views is a blatant attack on these values and a warning to all sportspeople who ventures to speak out.

History of Executing Sports Figures

The letter said that Vafaei Sani’s case was part of a pattern and emphasized Iran’s history of executing competitors for their convictions, including a national team leader, skipper of the football side, and a volleyball captain, leader of the women's volleyball squad. In two thousand twenty, an athlete, a young Iranian competitor, faced the death penalty.

Further supporters to the appeal comprise a yachting pioneer, who led the pioneering all-female crew in a global yacht race and was the initial female to earn a renowned sailing award; the ex- captain of the national squad Craig Foster; and a sports figure, who was in the national team for the global tournament.

Arrest and Flawed Legal Process

Vafaei Sani was arrested in the spring of 2020. The allegations against him comprised “causing deterioration on Earth through incendiarism and damage of public property”. His ruling has been reversed on two occasions but on the fourth of October it was upheld on the latest review. His legal proceedings was condemned as “grossly unfair” by rights defenders and groups.

Call to International Body

The appeal to prevent Vafaei Sani’s capital punishment is subsequent to a previous statement to the United Nations official for human rights, signed by more than a hundred human rights experts and groups, demanding measures to prevent the sports figure's death.

Execution Crisis
