Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that individuals who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users using these treatments need to be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the jabs explains the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Accounts

Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful return of appetite.

"It was like a switch activating and you become starving," said a patient.

The struggle is compounded if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Use

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural management.
